The Calico Sessions – R&B 2222

Well waddya know? We did find some more mixes, in fact I found a whole bunch of them, although some are quite long so I don’t know how may will be posted online – do you really want to download a file 100mb plus file?

Anyway, this is one of three R&B mixes that I found on a CD, so you can reasonably expect the other two parts to follow some time soon. On this mix are some of the usual suspects – PussyCat Dolls, Ciara, and the ubiquitous Girls Aloud. Another track not infrequently used is “Call My Name” by Charlotte Church. The first two singles from her ‘pop’ album (this one and ‘Crazy Chick’) were very solid pop efforts and I’m surprised that she hasn’t bothered following them up. Guess she’s too busy trying to carve out a career as a chat show host now, doubtless trying to keep her husband in hair product. The Calico Sessions – R&B 3238

This is the very last of the short mixes in The Calico Sessions series, unless others happen to turn up on some old CDs that I’ve forgotten about! Also, these aren’t technically mixed like the others are – this is more of a Radio 1, Chris Moyles-style mix, in that we raise the volume of one record whilst the other goes down! It’s because this is full of much slower records. I can’t remember doing the mix and for some reason I haven’t created a proper tracklisting, but there are tracks from (amongst others) Liberty X, Ciara, Kanye West, Wyclef Jean, Pharrel Williams and Gwen Stefani, and Mariah Carey. This video sees Mariah performing “It’s Like That“, “We Belong Together” and the track that’s featured on this mix, “Shake It Off” live on New Year’s Eve in Times Square:

Shenanigans 09 – Cut & Paste Volume II Part 2

The second part of the mix is 16 minutes long and has a few less tracks than the first part. It begins with a segue from the original version of Ciara’s “1, 2, Step” to the bootleg version that’s mixed with the Freestyler’s “Push Up”. My favourite part of this mix comes during the mash-up between the Ting Tings and The Chemical Brothers – as Kate from The Ting Tings keeps singing “the drums, the drums, the drums” you can hear “Hey boy, hey girl” building in the background. Maybe it’s just me but that tracks gives me the goousebumps every time!

The video I’ve chosen to go with Part 2 of the mix is Karoshi Bros “Love The World”.

Shenanigans 09 – Cut & Paste Volume II Part 1

The most recent full-length mix that I completed was Shenanigans 09 – Cut & Paste Volume 2. With Volume 1, I’d set myself a new record with the number of tracks I’d managed to get into a 80-minute mix, and Volume II was an attempt to beat my own record. A lot of the tracks used, especially in this first part, only have a part of them used – a loop, a breakbeat, or a vocal to create a long mash-up.

Unfortunately, as I got towards the end of the mix, I was plagued by technical problems as the sheer number of samples in memory at any one time was causing my PC to run slowly and have various problems. In the end, I gave up and so the last part isn’t quite as long as I wanted it to be, and doesn’t end as I hoped it would.

Still, it’s a great mix, has a lot of terrific tracks on it, and for your ease and convenience comes in just three parts, cunningly named Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. I’ve selected one video from each part just because I can. The video I’ve selected to got with the first part is Electrovamp’s “I Don’t Like The Vibe In The VIP“.

Electrovamp are two sisters, Kally and Tammy, from Caerphilly in Wales and this is their first single. They’re signed to Island Records. “I Don’t Like The Vibe In The VIP” is party music to dance to, plain and simple, and it has some lyrical couplets that will make you wince, but you’ll still end up singing it after the song has finished.

The plan is to release all three parts of this 60-minute mix over the weekend, so please keep checking back! Each part is slightly longer than previous mixes, so they take longer to download.

The BassLINE Tapes – Number 2

BassLine 2 was actually made before BassLINE 1 – sort of. My first ever 5-minute mix was called, cunningly, DMix001. I finished it, decided I could do better and went to work on BassLINE 2. Later, I came back to DMix001, changed the ending and renamed it BassLINE 2. Strangely, now that I listen to them again, I’ve decided I like DMix001 better so I don’t know why I gave it up in the first place. Both versions are offered up for download below.

Opening BassLINE 2 are two tracks simulatneously. One is Curiosity Killed The Cat’s “Down To Earth”, which I really loved. CKTC were, I thought, very under-rated. They had that teen idols tag that they only partly deserved – “Down To Earth” and “Misfit” are still excellent records when you listen to them now. And, very excitingly, lead singer Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot appeared on the box for Mike Read’s Pop Quiz:

The other song that you can hear during the opening bars is Tityo’s “Flowers”. Tityo is Neneh Cherry’s half-sister, and “Flowers“, although I don’t use any of the vocals here, is a gorgeous song that I have on about three different twelve-inch versions. It’s worth hunting down because it’s a great record.

Later on in the mix there’s a coming together of The Cure’s “In Between Days” and Girls Aloud’s “Biology”. I really wish I had the acapella for “Biology”, because there’s a bit of a key clash and although I’ve done my best to drop the bass out, you can still hear it a little (if you listen hard for it).

This mix differs from BassLINE 1 because of the tempo changes – whilst BassLINE 1 sticks at around the 125bpm mark, this one starts off at about 110bpm and ramps its way up to 140bpm by the end. Also, DMix001 features the first appearance in a mix of Free’s “Alright Now” and thus begins a strange fascination of mine in trying to set this record (which I remember thinking, when younger, was simply a jingle for Wrigley’s) in a dance music context. It’s not the last time I’ve used it!
