We’re used to ITV turning out shit TV programmes, like the awful Kingdom thing with Stephen Fry, or that bizarre show where Martin Clunes ends up emigrating to New Zealand. And a lot of them seem to have really awful titles too, it’s an obsession of theirs that only the tabloid newspapers can match. So it came as something of a surprise when their adaptaion of Val McDermid’s “A Place of Execution” turned out to be surprisingly not shit at all.

Juliet Stevenson stars in "A Place of Execution"
“A Place of Execution” was first published in 1999 and gathered a host of awards, including the LA Times book prize. The ITV adapation stars Juliet Stevenson as a reporter investigating the disappearance and murder of a 13-year old girl in 1963 with the intention of making a modern day documentary about the case. Greg Wise stars as the girl’s step-father, charged with the murder of his step-daughter and tried for the crime.
