Michael Jackson “Billie Jean (The Ad Fundum 3AM Bootleg)”

December 1, 2008

I think it’s fair to say that everyone who messes around with their own bootlegs has a crack at Michael Jackson’s classic “Billie Jean” at some point or another. There are some really good mixes of it out there, but for my purposes all I wanted was a version at a house tempo, an intro and outro long enough to mix with, and something that didn’t use The World’s Most Recognizable Bassline (TM).

I thought to myself, this will look dull without some random image. So I typed random into Googles image search and this was on the front page. Isnt it pretty? I have no idea what it is.

I thought to myself, "this will look dull without some random image". So I typed 'random' into Google's image search and this was on the front page. Isn't it pretty? I have no idea what it is.

I had the Bushwacka’s version of “Billie Jean” on vinyl (which is up for sale is anyone wants it – buy it for £2500 and I’ll through in another 2499 records free!) but it’s far too long to use, the intro goes on for about quarter of an hour and then you get two minutes of the song tacked on as an afterthought.

So I created this mix for my own use, which is essentially the acapella with a chopped up version of Bobby Blanco & Miki Moto’s “3AM” – itself practically a bootleg, as that makes liberal use of an old Todd Terry ‘House Sermon’ acapella. This is an early track, not created using Ableton so again the time-stretching and sync-ing can leave a little to be desired.

Holly Valance “Curious (Ad Fundum Extended Mix)”

November 17, 2008

This track, “Curious“, was scheduled to be the second single from the album “State of Mind” by Holly Rachel Vukadinovi, better known to you and I as Holly Valance.

Holly Valance State of Mind

Holly Valance "State of Mind"

The first single from the album, the title track “State of Mind”, did moderately well in the the UK but the album went down like a porn star on overtime, spending only one week in the UK charts. As a result this single was cancelled, despite early promotional work such as this appearance on the Des and Mel Show:

I always thought it was a shame that the single was cancelled because this is a decent slice of electro-pop and probably better than the previous single. It was a little slow for general club use, so I increased the tempo and borrowed some effects from a single on Hed Kendi to extend both the intro and outro. It’s another early one so therefore not done using Ableton LIve, and I think at times you can tell where the cheaper software has trouble with the time-stretching effects.

Girls Aloud “Grease (Ad Fundum Extended Edit)”

November 3, 2008

Not strictly a remix or a bootleg, this is an extended edit of “Grease“, sung by Girls Aloud for the Greasemania pointless cash-in TV special. I think the original mix of this cover version was mixed/produced by The Beatmasters although it’s probably better if you don’t quote me on that – I’m not honestly sure and I can’t be arsed to go research it.

Honestly, thats the closest I could find to a picture of Girls Aloud in high school outfits.

Honestly, that's the closest I could find to a picture of Girls Aloud in high school outfits.

I created this mix just so I could play it towards Christmas one year when everybody starts to get in the party mood. I don’t play party music as a rule but, you know, any excuse for Girls Aloud and when it’s linked to my favourite musical of all time, then I was always going to play it at some point! However, the track went down well and I started to get requests for it every week in Calico, so I ended up playing it far more than I expected to.

Candi Staton “You’ve Got The Love (Ad Fundum Bootleg)”

October 25, 2008

This, I think, is the very first bootleg that I ever created using software (as opposed to just keeping to records playing together at the same time and taping them). I can’t remember the name of the software I was using back then, but I remember it not being very good!

The underpinning bass and drum simple is the Praise CatsShined On Me” whilst additional sounds and samples come from the inbuilt sample library that came with the software. Whilst the idea for this bootleg was good, I think I’d make a better job of it if I tried it again because a) I would use Ableton Live, which is far better and b) I wouldn’t make it as long!

Faithless “Mass Destruction (Ad Fundum Bootleg)”

October 21, 2008

As well as producing some shorter mixes to use in Calico (see “The Calico Sessions R&B 1833“) I also made some of my own bootleg tracks to play, generally when I didn’t like the original mix!

One of these bootlegs was a mix of the vocals from Faithless‘ “Mass Destruction” with the music from “Jack Your Body” by Steve Silk Hurley. It’s quite an old mix and not done with Ableton Live – I used old software that only allowed me to mix with two channels. Still, for an old effort I don’t think it’s too bad and the audio quality is okay. It’s an mp3 file and it’s 4.8mb in size. You can listen to it by clicking ‘Play’ on the audio player below, and downloading by clicking on the link.

50 Cent “Candy Shop (Ad Fundum Bootleg Mix)”

October 20, 2008

As well as producing some shorter mixes to use in Calico (see “The Calico Session R&B 1833“) I also made some of my own bootleg tracks to play, generally when I didn’t like the original mix!

Mumbly Joe and Bart Simpson

One such track was Mumbly Joe’s “Candy Shop“, which is okay, but it’s quite slow and for a house jock like myself I preferred something a bit faster and more sprightly than this original mix:

So I decided to produce my own house version so that I could use it during a set and used Ableton Live to make one. I found a good quality acapella and spliced it with the 12” remix of Alison Limerick’s “Make It On My Own“. There wasn’t a decent instrumental to be found, so I just cut and pasted various sections from the 12” mix by Mark Pichiotti to create this mix.
